I love me some Babylon Bee. It is a parody church blog site and I love me some jesus jokes. I am a firm believer that if you truly love something, it means you can also make fun of it, in love.
So OBVIOUSLY, I loved this post: "Church Votes Unanimously To Replace Light Bulb In Foyer."
After cracking up, I wrote this:
I know this is parody, but its so close to the truth for most churches. And I am so so soooooo grateful that Old West Church is nothing like this.
Sometimes I wish I went to business school cause I think that would make me a better pastor. The church today is selling something people don't want, at least not the way we are marketing it.
The hay-day of the church is long gone. And we have to respond to that, not just wish we could go back to the "good ol' days."
Because lets be real, that church had some SERIOUS issues, including but not limited to paternalism, homophobia, militarism, sexism, racism, xenophobia, and transphobia. And honestly, it is not like all these things have gone away because the church has dwindled. They are still pervasive, rampant and destructive as ever.
However, I think the church declining has actually made many (white, het-cis people) in the church rethink the role of the church. We are not meant to be empire. We are meant to be the rebellion, the resistance, built on hope, against all powers and principalities.
We are here to overturn injustice, not perpetuate it.
We are here to lift up the lowly, and then step out of the way.
We are here to promote peace over power, inclusion over inequity.
The church is not some rigid, uptight, structure. The church is a living breathing organism that is porous and permeable, It is not meant to exclude. It is meant to adapt, to change, to evolve.
Times they are a changin' and the church has to change with it.
All this to say, I am so grateful that where I get to serve is chock full of servant leaders who support, suggest, and love change. Y'all give me hope and joy in the face of all the institutional nonsense.
